Emergency Preparedness Education
Who We Are
Citizen Corps localizes the national homeland security and disaster preparedness initiative. Virginia Citizen Corps will help residents make their communities safer from emergencies and disasters by getting them involved in these preparedness efforts.
Citizen Corps' programs create well-trained, readily available pools of local people who know their community well, and who can help during the first critical hours of a major disaster. They are still in the process of building a statewide Virginia Citizen Corps network. Some of the programs under development include: Community Emergency Response Team: (CERT) training program prepares communities to take a more active role in emergency preparedness.
Neighborhood Watch Program: Incorporates terrorism prevention and education into its existing crime prevention mission.
Public Safety Volunteers in Virginia: Provides support for law enforcement, fire, rescue and emergency management, freeing up more first responders for front-line duty.
Medical Reserve Corps: Coordinates volunteer health professionals to assist emergency medical personnel in times of crisis.
If you would like to know what opportunities are in place in your community, contact them and they will connect you with the local Citizen Corps activities in your neighborhood. As the Virginia Citizen Corps network is built, you will be able to connect directly with many volunteer opportunities online via their website.
