Special Olympics is a year-round international program of Olympic-type sports training and athletic competition for children and adults with intellectual disabilities, cognitive delay, or developmental disabilities. The sports provide the athletes continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy, and share their friendship with the family, other athletes, and the community. Special Olympics Virginia is the state program of Special Olympics.
The Southwest Region consists of three areas with specific cities and counties in each area. See the website for the sports offered in each area.
- Area 8 consists of Botetourt, Craig, Franklin, and Roanoke counties and the cities of Roanoke and Salem. Area 8 Coordinator: Bo Hall, swoffice@specialolympicsva.org.
- Area 9 consists of Bland, Carroll, Floyd, Galax, Giles, Grayson, Montgomery, Pulaski, and Wythe counties and the city of Radford. Area 9 Coordinator: swoffice@specialolympicsva.org
- Area 10 consists of Buchanan, Dickenson, Lee, Russell, Scott, Smyth, Tazewell, and Washington counties, the towns of Wise and Norton, and the city of Bristol. Area 10 Coordinator: Darlene Dean, swoffice@specialolympicsva.org.
