Who We Are
SOAR365 (formerly Greater Richmond ARC) operates Camp Baker as an intellectual disability residential respite service for children, adolescents and adults with an intellectual or developmental disability. Respite gives the parents and primary caregivers a much needed break.
Camp Baker is a full-service, accessible retreat facility located on 22 wooded acres near the Pocahontas State Park in Chesterfield County, Virginia. Camp Baker supports children from age 6 through adulthood with intellectual or developmental disabilities.
The camp helps these individuals develop friendships, build self-esteem, enjoy therapeutic recreation and social activities and much more. Campers enjoy swimming in the pool, hiking on nature trails, horseback riding and canoeing, tent camping, dancing with friends and arts & crafts, music and sports.
Skills are also promoted that help maintain health such as self-care, hygiene, meal preparation and medication management. Activities provide opportunities to build basic skills for employment and independent living such as carrying out tasks, becoming a member of a group, communicating with peers and others and using community resources. Some transportation services are provided for scheduled events while attending the camp.
This program can also provide support for an individual who is/has co-occurring diagnosis, limited in mobility, brain injured or with autistic spectrum disorders.
