Who We Are

The Appalachian Independence Center, Inc. (AIC) provides four basic core services to persons with disabilities:

  • peer counseling,
  • independent living skills training,
  • information and referral,
  • advocacy.

Other services may include help with:

  • adaptive technology,
  • employment,
  • emergency assistance programs,
  • home modifications,
  • housing assistance,
  • legal aid,
  • local government agency issues,
  • Medicaid waiver services.

Centers for Independent Living, often referred to as "CILs" are non-residential places of action and coalition, where individuals with disabilities learn empowerment and develop the skills necessary to make lifestyle choices. Centers provide services and advocacy to promote the leadership, independence and productivity of persons with disabilities. Centers work with both individuals and with local communities to remove barriers to independence and ensure the equality of persons with disabilities.

Services to the general community include disability awareness services, technical assistance regarding accessibility and legal issues and general disability information.
