Who We Are
The Legal Advocacy Program of the Women's Resource Center of the New River Valley assists victims of domestic or sexual violence in the use and understanding of the criminal justice system. We offer information on legal processes, as well as court escorts and support.
Courtroom tours, pre-court meetings with Commonwealth's Attorneys, and court accompaniment throughout the hearing and trial are provided by the Victim/Witness Program.
Victims, their families, and witnesses are provided with information about the following: significant developments in the prosecution of cases; explanation of various steps in the criminal justice process; notice of court dates and judicial proceedings such as continuances and cancellations; disposition of cases; restitution and compensation; what is happening at any given moment during the hearing or trial.
Clients want to know what legal options are open to them, how to apply for custody and support, where they can get legal advice, how to get protection from an abuser, how to take out a warrant and the consequences of doing so, what to do if they want a divorce or to live separately, and so on. Referrals are made to Social Services, Legal Aid, Lawyer Referral Services, Court Services Unit, Magistrate, Access, Mental Health Services, and other community agencies.
