Who We Are

York Social Services administers the TANF program.  The Code of Virginia, §63.2, requires that the TANF program be administered in accordance with federal and state statutes and regulations and policies established by the State Board of Social Services.   The TANF program provides eligible families with a monthly cash payment to meet their basic needs.  Participants may be provided with services such as job skills training, work experience, job readiness training, child care assistance, transportation, and other work related expenses.

An eligible child must be under age 18, or if 18, will graduate from high school before age 19, going to school regularly if the child is between the ages of five and 18,  living with a parent or other relative and a U.S. citizen or an eligible immigrant.

Virginia's TANF program emphasizes personal responsibility. Participants may be provided with services such as job skills training, work experience, job readiness training, child care assistance, transportation, and other work related expenses.

You can apply for Benefit Programs online at CommonHelp or by telephone by calling 1-855-635-4370.

Temporary Aid to Needy Families Emergency Assistance (TANF-EA) may be provided to needy families with children who are eligible for TANF or are receiving TANF (including recipients whose TANF case is currently suspended due to a VIEW sanction), when the family is facing eviction or has experienced a natural disaster or a fire that results in unmet needs for maintaining the household or the home itself, as long as income eligibility is met. Natural disasters may include, but are not limited to, a tornado, hurricane, flood, a public health emergency, or any disaster as declared by the Governor.  To apply online, go to www.commonhelp.virginia.gov and click on All Benefit Programs, or call 1-855-635-4370.
