Peer Counseling and Independent Living Skills Training

Junction Center for Independent Living (JCIL) offers peer counselors who help individuals with developmental disabilities gain independence and self-reliance. Participants develop a plan with goals aimed at achieving maximum independence. Through counseling, and sharing experiences of coping with sensory disabilities, participants learn about resources necessary to achieve their goals. Peer counseling includes individual and group support.

Independent living skills training is available in both individual and group settings. Independent living skills include:

• personal assistant management,
• building self-esteem,
• money management,
• navigating ones environment,
• self-advocacy.

All programs are designed to meet specific individual needs. The trainers provide encouragement and information about community resources and sharing insights and perspectives from personal experience.
