Who We Are
Charlottesville Parks & Recreation provides leisure and recreation activities for youth, teens and adults with intellectual disability, developmental disabilities, learning disabilities, sensory or physical disabilities and special health needs whose recreational needs cannot be met by regular programs. The adaptive activities are to improve self-esteem, as well as improve health, social skills, recreation skills and independence. Staff participant ratio is usually 1 to 8.
Some activities include day and overnight trips; wheelchair basketball; therapeutic classes in exercise; hiking; swimming; cooking; ceramics and others.
Supper Club: small group outings monthly to local restaurants so participants can learn social skills, how to order a meal, pay for meals and tip and communication skills. For teens and adults.
Activities for Individuals with Visual Impairments: a lunch and activity is held once a month at the Key Recreation Center for individuals with visual impairments.
Therapeutic Summer Playground Program: for 8 to 21 year olds with moderate disabilities at Crow Recreation Center; six week program, Monday through Friday, 9:00 AM until 4:00 PM. After the summer camp program ends there is a 1 week Camp Creativity Program, a 1 week Camp Green Challenge Program for teens with disabilities and a 1 week adult camp.
Visit the website for other recreation programs. Anyone interested in being a volunteer with Therapeutic Recreation should call Sarah Blech or Bob Isabelle.
